Nollywood Star Chinedu Ikedieze Urges Nigerians to Take Mental Health Seriously
Respected Nollywood actor Chinedu Ikedieze, popularly known as Aki, has called on Nigerians to give greater attention to mental health awareness and emotional well-being. The movie star emphasised that mental stability is just as important as physical health, urging people to seek help when necessary and avoid bottling up their emotions.
Speaking during a recent interview, Ikedieze expressed concern over the rising rate of depression, anxiety, and emotional stress among young Nigerians. He said that society often overlooks mental health issues due to stigma, which leads many to suffer in silence.
“We need to understand that mental health is not a Western concept — it’s a human reality,” he stated. “A lot of people are going through tough times, and they need support, not judgment. It’s time we start having open conversations about mental wellness.”
The Nollywood legend, best known for his iconic roles alongside Osita Iheme, also noted that success and fame do not exempt anyone from emotional struggles. According to him, entertainers and public figures often deal with intense pressure to meet societal expectations, which can take a toll on their mental well-being.
He advised Nigerians to embrace therapy, talk to professionals, and practice self-care as part of their daily lifestyle.
“There’s nothing wrong with talking to a therapist or taking a break when you need one. Mental health matters, and we must prioritise it if we want a better society,” Ikedieze added.
Fans and social media users have applauded the actor for his openness and advocacy, commending him for using his platform to promote mental health awareness in Nigeria.
