Obasanjo says the fight against corruption must start with leaders.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has underlined that accountability at the highest levels of leadership is the first step in the battle against corruption in Nigeria.
Speaking via a virtual session called “Boiling Point Arena” on Sunday, December 8, 2024, held by a private radio station in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo emphasized the significance of setting an example when combating corruption.
Obasanjo declared, “The best way to fight corruption is starting from the head.” He also said that sincere dedication to integrity by high-ranking officials will set the example for the rest of the country.
He characterized corruption as a “hydra-headed” issue that is ingrained in society and that need for persistent and steady work to eradicate.
He vividly compared corruption to a “babariga,” or traditional dress, that is challenging to control from all sides without making concessions. In addition, Obasanjo demanded changes to the hiring process for leaders, favoring selections based on qualifications rather than political or ethnic ties.
In order to achieve lasting national growth, the former president urged leaders to place a high priority on transparency and divine purpose.
