Prosperity Will Not Come by Taxing Poverty – Peter Obi
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has cautioned against economic policies that place additional tax burdens on poor and struggling citizens, stating that prosperity will not come from “taxing poverty.”
Obi made the remark while reacting to ongoing conversations around taxation, revenue generation, and economic reforms in Nigeria. According to him, sustainable national growth must be driven by productivity, job creation, and support for businesses rather than policies that further strain low-income earners.
He argued that while taxation is an important tool for governance, it must be applied responsibly and equitably. Obi stressed that governments should focus on expanding the productive base of the economy, reducing waste, and blocking revenue leakages instead of relying heavily on taxes that affect basic survival.
The former governor also emphasized the need for investments in education, healthcare, and small-scale enterprises, noting that empowering citizens economically would naturally lead to increased tax compliance and stronger national revenue in the long term.
His comments have sparked discussions among policy analysts and citizens, many of whom agree that economic reforms must balance revenue needs with social protection. Supporters say Obi’s position reflects the realities faced by millions of Nigerians amid rising living costs.
