A dashcam footage shows the incredible moment an eight-year-old boy steered his mum’s car to safety after she had a seizure at 65mph. Ben Hedger grabbed the steering wheel after Lauren Smith, 27, blacked out on a busy dual carriageway.
Dylan Howell, 62, who was in a following vehicle, filmed the primary schoolboy ramping her Ford Ka up onto a grass verge.
Taxi driver Dylan said: “I saw the car veering off to the left.
“When I got alongside I could see this young lady unconscious behind the wheel with really long blonde hair.
“She was collapsed and I could clearly see her eyes were closed. “Because Ben is so short I could only see his arm hanging onto the steering wheel.
He deserves a medal, if it wasn’t for his quick thinking their could have been a pileup.”
Former RAF missile operator Dylan, of Norfolk in England was taking a client to hospital when he witnessed the near miss last Monday.
He then noticed Lauren’s silver Ka veering across the lanes and up onto the hard shoulder. Other road users, including a work van, helped shepherd the stricken car to safety.
Lauren, of Colchester, said: “My son is my hero and he deserves recognition for his bravery…” The mum was taken to hospital where doctors carried out a series of tests.
Medics believe she may have suffered the seizure because of a virus.
