Seun Kuti: “Politicians, Not Yahoo Boys, Are the Reason Foreigners Don’t Respect Nigerians”
Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has sparked fresh controversy after stating that Nigerian politicians, not internet fraudsters known as Yahoo Boys, are the real reason why foreigners show little respect for Nigerians.
In his remarks, the outspoken son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti argued that while Yahoo Boys have often been blamed for Nigeria’s negative global image, the consistent actions of corrupt politicians do far greater damage. According to him, leaders who embezzle public funds, mismanage resources, and prioritize self-interest over national development are the true stain on the country’s reputation.
Seun Kuti emphasized that these politicians travel abroad, flaunt ill-gotten wealth, and exploit Nigeria’s resources, which paints a far worse picture of the country than the acts of online fraudsters. He noted that foreign governments and investors judge Nigeria based on the actions of its leaders, not just its citizens.
His statement quickly gained traction on social media, sparking debates among Nigerians. While some agreed that political corruption has damaged Nigeria’s image more than anything else, others argued that Yahoo Boys also contribute to the stigma Nigerians face abroad.
This is not the first time Seun Kuti has called out the political elite. Known for his fiery activism, he continues to use his platform to challenge leadership and push for accountability in Nigeria.
