Steven Gerrard has what it takes to cope with the pressure if he is appointed the new manager of Rangers, believes former England team-mate Frank Lampard.
It is claimed Gerrard is set to leave his role as Liverpool academy coach to take charge of the Ibrox club, after holding positive talks with the Scottish club’s cheifs.
If appointed, the former Liverpool and England captain will be tasked with closing the gap on Old Firm rivals Celtic, who have just secured their seventh straight Scottish league title.
Rangers have progressed steadily since the club’s liquidation in 2012, winning three promotions in four years to return to the top flight. The Gers could finish this season in second place, but fans are eager to see the club begin to challenge their rivals again.
And Lampard believes taking charge of the Scottish side is ‘a great opportunity’ for Gerrard’s first managerial role.
Speaking on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Lampard said: “In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it’s a great opportunity for him.
If it feels right, I think he can handle that pressure from his playing days, he’s no stranger to that with the career he had in the game.
“He has cut his teeth at Liverpool with the young lads there and at some point Steven is going to step out of that and go into managing men, managing a first-team.
“So that’s why I think Rangers would be a great opportunity for him.”
