UCL: AC Milan Boss Explains Decision To Start Chukwueze Against Newcastle

AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has explained the decision to start Samuel in the club’s UEFA Champions League clash against United on Tuesday night.

The former champions were held to a 0-0 draw by the Magpies at the San Siro.

Chukwueze made his first start since linking up with the Rooseneri from Villarreal this summer.

The 24-year-old was in action for 61 minutes before he was replaced by Christian Pulisic.

Pioli said he started the Nigeria international because of his attributes.

“We return to San Siro to play the first Champions League game. It is a different competition, we must not think about what we failed to do last time, but focus on playing to our strengths with our own characteristics,” Pioli told Football Italia.

“This is the first game of a tough group, so we need the right approach against an opponent that makes aggression, intensity and physical strength their greatest weapons.

“Chukwueze is rapid, good at one-on-one situations, taking on a tall and physical full-back, but one with a very different pace to him. Pobega is very good at running into the box and entering those spaces.”
