UK-Bound 74-Year-Old Grandpa Arrested at Abuja Airport With 11kg Cocaine in Balloons
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 74-year-old man at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport after discovering 11 kilograms of cocaine concealed in balloons in his luggage.
The suspect was reportedly preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom when the illicit drugs were uncovered during routine screening.
According to authorities, the cocaine was carefully packaged in several balloons and hidden inside the passenger’s baggage in an attempt to evade airport security checks.
However, vigilant officers detected the suspicious items during inspection procedures, leading to the immediate arrest of the elderly suspect.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue to determine the source of the drugs and whether he is linked to a wider trafficking network.
Officials added that further intelligence gathering is ongoing to identify other individuals who may be connected to the attempted smuggling operation.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by the NDLEA to combat drug trafficking through Nigeria’s major airports.
Security agencies have continued to strengthen screening measures and intelligence operations in a bid to stop traffickers attempting to move illegal substances through international travel routes.
Authorities have reiterated that anyone involved in drug trafficking will face the full weight of the law, regardless of age or status.
The agency also urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal drug movements.
