Ukraine Sinks Russian Submarine in Crimea Amid Drone Strikes
In a significant military operation, Ukrainian forces have successfully sunk the Russian submarine Rostov-on-Don in the port of Sevastopol, Crimea. This attack marks a critical blow to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, highlighting the ongoing strategic efforts of Ukraine to reclaim control over its territories.
On the evening of August 3, 2024, Ukrainian defense forces launched a coordinated strike targeting the Russian submarine B-237 Rostov-on-Don, a Kilo-class vessel commissioned in 2014. The submarine, valued at approximately USD 300 million, was struck and subsequently sank at its dock in Sevastopol harbor. The attack was part of a broader military campaign that also targeted and significantly damaged four launchers of the Triumf S-400 air defense system in Crimea.
The operation was confirmed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which emphasized the strategic importance of this success. The General Staff stated, “The destruction of the Rostov-on-Don once again proves that there is no safe place for the Russian fleet in the Ukrainian territorial waters of the Black Sea.”
The Rostov-on-Don was one of the few Kilo-class submarines in the Russian fleet capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles, which have been used extensively in the conflict. The submarine had previously been damaged in a Ukrainian missile attack on September 13, 2023, but was repaired and returned to service.
This latest strike is part of Ukraine’s intensified military efforts to disrupt Russian supply lines and weaken their naval capabilities in the Black Sea. Ukrainian forces have increasingly utilized advanced drone technology and precision strikes to target high-value Russian military assets.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the operation, stating, “This successful strike against the Rostov-on-Don and the Triumf air defense systems demonstrates our commitment and capability to defend our nation and reclaim our territories. Our forces will continue to target Russian military infrastructure until our sovereignty is fully restored.”
Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov also commented on the operation, highlighting the role of international support in strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities. “Our allies have provided us with critical resources and intelligence, enabling us to execute such precise and impactful operations. The sinking of the Rostov-on-Don is a testament to the strength and resolve of our armed forces.”
The sinking of the Rostov-on-Don represents a significant setback for Russian naval operations in the Black Sea, potentially limiting their ability to launch missile strikes from the sea. This event is expected to bolster Ukrainian morale and reinforce the international community’s support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.
As the conflict continues, both Ukrainian and Russian forces are likely to intensify their military activities, with strategic strikes and counterstrikes shaping the course of the war. The international community remains watchful, with diplomatic efforts ongoing to seek a resolution to the conflict.
