US Officials Split Over Response to Iran Protests, Report Says

Senior U.S. officials are reportedly split over the appropriate U.S. response to ongoing protests in Iran, as the unrest continues to spread and tensions escalate between Washington and Tehran.

According to reports, President Donald Trump is set to receive a briefing on various options for responding to the protests, including strengthened sanctions, cyber operations, and even potential military action, though no decision has been made on direct intervention.

The discussions come amid a deadly crackdown by Iranian authorities against demonstrators, which has triggered international concern and drawn vocal U.S. support for the protesters. Trump has publicly stated that the U.S. is “ready to help” as Iranians push for political and economic reforms.

However, lawmakers and senior officials remain cautious. Some U.S. military leaders have noted that a rushed or poorly planned strike could backfire, potentially uniting Iranians behind their government or prompting a wider regional conflict.

Iran has fiercely rejected outside criticism, accusing the U.S. of meddling in its internal affairs and insisting its protests are a domestic matter. Tehran has also warned that any U.S. military action would be met with retaliation, potentially targeting U.S. and allied interests in the Middle East.

The protests, which began in late December over economic hardship and the sharp devaluation of the rial, have morphed into one of the most sustained waves of unrest in years, with activists reporting hundreds of deaths and widespread detentions.
