Vice Admiral Idi Abass Assumes Command as 23rd Chief of Naval Staff

The Nigerian Navy has welcomed a new era of leadership as Vice Admiral Idi Abass officially assumed office as the 23rd Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), succeeding Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. The change of command ceremony, held at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja, marks a significant moment for the nation’s maritime defense sector.

In his inaugural address, Vice Admiral Abass pledged to build upon the achievements of his predecessor while intensifying efforts to combat maritime insecurity, oil theft, and illegal fishing within Nigeria’s territorial waters. He emphasized that his administration would prioritize operational efficiency, personnel welfare, and the technological modernization of naval assets to effectively secure the country’s maritime domain.

The new Naval Chief reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to supporting national economic growth by ensuring safe navigation and protecting Nigeria’s maritime resources. He also highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration and partnerships with international allies to strengthen maritime security and intelligence sharing.

Vice Admiral Abass, a highly decorated naval officer, brings decades of experience to the position, having served in various command and strategic roles. His appointment is widely viewed as a move to consolidate recent gains in maritime safety and further professionalize the Nigerian Navy’s operations.

As the 23rd Chief of Naval Staff, Abass’s leadership is expected to shape the next phase of the Navy’s transformation — focusing on discipline, innovation, and proactive defense strategy in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests.
