“We Are Not for Sale” — Greenlanders Protest as Trump Revives Takeover Threats
Residents of Greenland have taken to the streets in protest following renewed comments by former United States President Donald Trump, in which he once again suggested the idea of the US taking control of the Arctic island.
Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans declaring “We are not for sale”, pushing back strongly against remarks that many Greenlanders view as dismissive of their sovereignty, identity, and right to self-determination. The demonstrations were held in several locations, drawing participation from citizens, activists, and political groups.
Trump had previously sparked global controversy during his presidency after floating the idea of the United States purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark rich in natural resources and of growing strategic importance due to its location and climate-change-driven accessibility. His latest comments have reignited tensions and public outrage in the region.
Greenlandic leaders and community representatives reiterated that the island’s future rests solely in the hands of its people. Many protesters described the renewed takeover rhetoric as colonial-minded and disrespectful, stressing that Greenland is not a commodity to be negotiated between powerful nations.
Danish officials have also maintained that Greenland is not for sale, a position consistently echoed since the original proposal first emerged. Analysts note that while Greenland holds strategic value amid rising geopolitical competition in the Arctic, any change in its status would require the consent of its population, not external pressure.
The protests highlight growing sensitivity around sovereignty issues as global powers increasingly turn their attention to the Arctic for security, shipping routes, and mineral resources.
