What to expect from the 2025 Grammy Awards
Finally, the eagerly awaited 67th Academy Grammy Awards ceremony has arrived.
The Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, is the venue for the event, which is set for Sunday.
Some of the biggest names in music, including those from Afrobeats, pop, rock, and hip-hop, will be included at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Music released between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024 will be recognized with 94 awards.
Beyoncé and Taylor Swift will compete for “Album of the Year” this year, which will make the event even more exciting.
Here are some things to consider before to the award ceremony:
TIME AND HOST
This year’s Grammys will be aired live on CBS, the American commercial broadcast television and radio network.
It will also be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+ and the Grammy website.
The main award ceremony is set to take place from 2:00 am to 5:30 am Nigerian time on Monday morning.
It however remains unclear which station will broadcast the live show in Nigeria.
Trevor Noah, the South African comedian and TV personality, is returning to host the award show for the fifth consecutive year.
‘Where was I’, Noah’s 2023 Netflix comedy special, was also nominated for the ‘Best Comedy Album’ category.
NIGERIAN ARTISTES NOMINATED
The Recording Academy introduced the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category for its 66th edition in 2024.
Nigerian music stars Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Davido, Lojay, Burna Boy and Tems were all nominated in the award category this year.
Tems was also nominated in the ‘Best R&B Song’ category alongside Ronald Banful for the song ‘Burning’.
The Nigerian songstress earned her third nomination in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category for ‘Born In The Wild’, alongside Rema, who is nominated for his album ‘Heis’.
PERFORMANCES
The award show will feature electrifying performances from some of the biggest names in the music industry.
They include John Legend, Shakira, Stevie Wonder, Billie Eilish, Janelle Monae, Cynthia Erivo, Sabrina Carpenter, Raye and Brittany Howard.
Others are Benson Boone, Doechii, Jacob Collier, Sheryl Crow, Herbie Hancock, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Chris Martin, Brad Paisley, Teddy Swims, Lainey Wilson, and St. Vincent.
HOW THE GRAMMY WORKS
More than 13,000 members of the Recording Academy vote for the Grammys each year.
These include musicians, producers, lyricists, and even those who write CD liner notes. All former Grammy winners are also eligible to vote.
Each member is allowed to vote in up to 10 categories across genres they are knowledgeable about.
In addition, all members, regardless of background, vote for the six biggest awards of the night, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Songwriter of the Year, and Producer of the Year.
HOW HAVE CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES AFFECTED THE CEREMONY?
The wildfires have had a major impact on this year’s Grammys.
All the usual glamorous events surrounding the Grammys such as pre-parties and after-parties have been cancelled. Instead, more funding has been redirected toward relief efforts.
The Recording Academy and MusiCares charity have launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort and have pledged $1 million to support affected music professionals.
