Why Filmmakers Now Turn to YouTube – Deyemi Okanlawon Explains Industry Shift
Nollywood actor and producer Deyemi Okanlawon has shared insights into why more Nigerian filmmakers are increasingly turning to YouTube as a primary platform for releasing their content. Speaking in a recent interview, the movie star highlighted the changing dynamics of the film industry and the growing need for creators to take control of distribution.
According to Deyemi, YouTube offers filmmakers the opportunity to bypass traditional gatekeepers and connect directly with a global audience. “For many creators, it’s about access, freedom, and visibility. With YouTube, you can tell your story your way and reach millions without waiting for cinema slots or TV airtime,” he explained.
He noted that while cinema releases and streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video still play a significant role, the flexibility and revenue potential of YouTube have become too attractive to ignore—especially for independent filmmakers and upcoming talents looking to build their audience base.
Deyemi Okanlawon also pointed out that YouTube provides real-time feedback, analytics, and community engagement, which help filmmakers understand their audience better and improve their content. He emphasized that monetization tools and brand partnerships have further made YouTube a viable business model for creators who understand the platform’s dynamics.
“In a world where content consumption is evolving fast, you have to meet your audience where they are—and right now, a large part of that audience is on YouTube,” he said.
As Nollywood continues to expand its global footprint, Deyemi’s remarks reflect a broader trend of digital disruption reshaping how Nigerian stories are told, distributed, and monetized. With more filmmakers embracing YouTube, the platform is fast becoming a major force in the future of African storytelling.
