Why we are sponsoring African Voices – GLO
African Voices. Globacom started sponsoring African Voices nine years ago and has over the years contributed to changing the narrative in the world information order by allowing Africans to tell their own stories to the world without misrepresentations.
The national telecommunications operator and exclusive sponsor of African Voices on CNN International stated the need to give Africa a genuine platform to tell its own story informed their decision to sponsor the programme since 2010.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the company, Mrs. Bella Disu, made the affirmation at the 10th Anniversary Cocktail which was held by CNN in Victoria Island, Lagos, in a bid to celebrate a decade of an uninterrupted broadcast of the programme.
She told the audience, which comprised of Glo dealers, publishers and chief executive officers of major media organisations, popular bloggers, entertainment stars and prominent Nigerians, that CNN African Voices had, in the past ten years, brought to limelight several African legends and budding talents who are making a difference in various fields of endeavor. Some of which include young entrepreneurs like Ethiopia’s Abai Schulze and legends like the late Chinua Achebe.
“Africa has always had rich stories, cultures, and innovations. We have never lacked talents, what we lacked were platforms to amplify them in a reverend and authentic manner,” she stated, adding that CNN African Voices, had “played its part by spot-lighting a continent that has a lot to offer to the world, and undoubtedly accelerating its global influence”.
“At Globacom, we play our part by providing world-class telecommunication services and supporting platforms that promote growth and success. And to this end, I look forward to many more years of mutually beneficial partnership with CNN”, she concluded.
Also, the Account Director, CNN International Commercial, Zara Driss rendered a few words, stating “We are proud to work with such a committed, long-standing sponsor of a show that shares our passion about the diverse culture of Africa. Together with Globacom, we look forward to this new era of African Voices and its television and digital programming that will raise the profile of the continent’s changemakers amongst international audience”.

In her own remarks, the Supervising Producer of African Voices, Jenni Watts, said, “It is humbling to come to Africa to see the impact of the stories and have time to reflect,” adding that she was a huge fan of Chimamanda Adichie who is well loved by Mrs. Michelle Obama.
The event was lit up with performances from ‘juju’ music maestro, King Sunny Ade as well as the famous ‘Orente’ Music Crooner, Adekunle Gold.
