YouTube Is The Future Of Nollywood, But Piracy Remains A Threat — Afolayan
Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has emphasized the growing importance of digital platforms like YouTube in shaping the future of Nollywood, while also expressing concern over the persistent threat of piracy that continues to plague the industry.
In a recent media chat, Afolayan pointed out that YouTube has become a powerful tool for content creators, offering filmmakers the freedom to distribute their works directly to global audiences without the bottlenecks associated with traditional cinema or television networks. According to him, the platform allows Nollywood to expand its reach, monetize efficiently, and tell more diverse stories.
“YouTube is the future of Nollywood,” Afolayan stated. “It allows us to bypass the gatekeepers and connect directly with the audience. The opportunities for monetization, global exposure, and creative control are endless.”
However, the award-winning director also issued a strong warning about the dangers of piracy, which he described as a “crippling virus” in the Nigerian film industry. Despite technological advancements, pirated content continues to spread online, affecting revenue and discouraging investment in quality production.
Afolayan, known for critically acclaimed films like Aníkúlápó and October 1, urged stakeholders and government agencies to intensify efforts in combating digital piracy. He also called for stronger copyright enforcement and collaboration with tech companies to protect intellectual property across platforms.
As Nollywood continues to embrace digital distribution, Afolayan believes that platforms like YouTube will play a major role in redefining the industry’s global image. Still, he maintains that without tackling piracy head-on, the growth of Nigeria’s film sector could be significantly undermined.
The filmmaker’s remarks serve as a timely reminder that while the digital era offers new possibilities for Nollywood, long-standing challenges must still be addressed to ensure sustainable progress.
