TikTokers Sent To Prison For Accusing Wunmi Of Killing Mohbad
Two TikTok users have been remanded in prison custody for spreading false accusations against Wunmi, the wife of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, alleging she was responsible for his death. The social media influencers, whose videos went viral shortly after the tragic passing of the artist, are now facing the consequences of their defamatory claims.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the duo was arraigned before a Magistrate Court after weeks of investigation. The charges border on cyberbullying, defamation, and spreading false information with intent to damage reputations.
Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, died in September 2023 under controversial circumstances that sparked nationwide protests and calls for justice. Amid the uproar, various content creators took to social media platforms especially TikTok to speculate and make unsubstantiated allegations, with some pointing fingers at his widow, Wunmi.
Authorities warned the public against peddling unfounded claims, especially during ongoing investigations, emphasizing that such actions can obstruct justice and incite public unrest. The imprisonment of the accused TikTokers serves as a stern message about the dangers of misinformation and the growing responsibility of social media influencers in the digital age.
Wunmi, who has consistently maintained her innocence and called for a thorough investigation into her husband’s death, has faced immense pressure and online harassment in the wake of these rumors. The case continues to generate attention, with many Nigerians hoping for a conclusive and transparent outcome regarding the singer’s untimely demise.
This development highlights the critical need for digital accountability as TikTok, Twitter, and other platforms become primary sources of information—and misinformation in Nigeria’s media landscape.
