Residents Responsible for Lagos Flood Crisis, Says Balogun
Environmental advocate Balogun has attributed the flood crisis in Lagos to the actions of residents rather than the government. Speaking on the recurring disaster, Balogun emphasized that indiscriminate waste disposal and neglect of drainage channels remain the major contributors to flooding across the state.
According to him, despite several campaigns and warnings from the Lagos State Government, many residents continue to dump refuse in canals and block waterways, leading to severe flooding during the rainy season.
Balogun further noted that while climate change has its role in intensifying rainfall, the lack of proper waste management practices among Lagosians makes the situation worse. He urged citizens to take responsibility and adopt better environmental habits to reduce the menace.
“Until residents change their behavior and stop blocking drainages with refuse, the flood crisis will persist,” he stated.
His comments come after heavy downpours in recent weeks left parts of Lagos submerged, displacing families and damaging properties worth millions. The government has since reinforced its call on residents to embrace environmental discipline as the first step to combating the problem.
