Legendary “Fawlty Towers” Actress Prunella Scales Dies at 93
The entertainment world is mourning the loss of British actress Prunella Scales, who died peacefully at her London home at the age of 93. Her sons confirmed the news in a statement, noting that she passed away on Monday after a long career and years of illness.
Prunella Scales became a cultural icon for her portrayal of Sybil Fawlty in the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers, opposite John Cleese. Although the series totalled only 12 episodes (1975 and 1979), it became one of the most celebrated comedies in British television history.
Her career, however, went far beyond that single role. She began in the early 1950s and went on to star in roles ranging from sitcoms like The Marriage Lines, to stage performances and dramatic work such as playing Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution.
In her later years she lived with dementia, a condition she had managed publicly with dignity and courage. Her openness about the illness helped raise awareness of the realities of ageing and memory loss.
Her legacy leaves behind:
-
A body of work spanning nearly seven decades
-
A benchmark performance in comedic timing and characterisation
-
An example of graceful transition from lead roles to advocacy and awareness
Her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, said she died peacefully at home and that just the day before her death she had been watching Fawlty Towers. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
