UK Issues Travel Advisory Warning Citizens Against Visiting Borno, Zamfara, and Other Nigerian States
The United Kingdom government has released a new travel advisory warning its citizens to avoid traveling to several states in Nigeria, citing heightened insecurity, terrorist threats, and kidnapping risks. The advisory, published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), specifically listed Borno, Zamfara, Kaduna, Yobe, and Sokoto among the areas considered unsafe for foreign travel.
According to the statement, the advisory follows recent incidents of bandit attacks, insurgency activities, and inter-communal violence across parts of northern and central Nigeria. The FCDO noted that while major cities like Lagos and Abuja remain relatively stable, visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution, avoid non-essential travel, and remain alert to security developments.
The UK government also warned that the Nigerian security situation remains volatile, with potential threats of terrorism, especially in the North-East and North-West regions. The advisory further highlighted risks of armed robbery, civil unrest, and abductions targeting foreigners, urging British nationals in Nigeria to register their presence with local authorities and maintain close contact with the British High Commission in Abuja.
This latest advisory underscores ongoing concerns within the international community about Nigeria’s internal security and its impact on tourism, investment, and diplomatic relations. It also comes as Nigerian authorities continue to intensify counter-terrorism operations and community policing efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across the country.
