Corruption Blocking God’s Blessings on Nigeria — EFCC Chairman Olukoyede

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has warned that corruption remains a major spiritual and economic barrier preventing Nigeria from attaining its full potential, insisting that no nation can thrive where dishonesty is normalised.

Speaking during a public engagement on ethics, leadership and nation-building, Olukoyede said corruption has gone beyond financial misconduct and has become a deep-rooted moral crisis that continues to weaken institutions, destroy trust and stall development across the country.

According to him, Nigeria is richly endowed with human and natural resources, yet widespread corruption has consistently undermined growth, equity and social justice. He stressed that divine favour cannot coexist with systemic dishonesty, adding that the nation’s struggle with poverty, insecurity and underdevelopment is closely tied to the erosion of ethical values.

Olukoyede noted that the fight against corruption cannot be left to government agencies alone, urging Nigerians to take personal responsibility by rejecting bribery, abuse of office and shortcut culture in both public and private life. He emphasised that integrity must start from homes, schools, religious institutions and workplaces if the country is to witness meaningful change.

The EFCC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to strengthening enforcement, intelligence-driven investigations and collaboration with local and international partners. However, he warned that arrests and prosecutions alone would not solve the problem unless citizens collectively embrace honesty and accountability.

He also called on religious and traditional leaders to use their influence to promote ethical conduct, saying moral reorientation is essential for national rebirth. “We cannot continue to pray for progress while glorifying corruption,” Olukoyede cautioned, stressing that values and actions must align with aspirations.

His remarks have reignited national conversations around governance, accountability and the moral direction of the country, with many observers agreeing that Nigeria’s path to sustainable development depends largely on confronting corruption at every level.
