Why Nigeria’s Healthcare System Needs Regulation – Toyin Lawani
Nigerian fashion entrepreneur and public figure Toyin Lawani has stressed the urgent need for stronger regulation of Nigeria’s healthcare system, warning that the lack of proper oversight continues to put lives at risk.
Lawani noted that many healthcare facilities across the country operate without consistent standards, allowing unqualified personnel, poorly equipped centres and unethical practices to flourish. According to her, weak enforcement by regulatory authorities has made it difficult to hold erring practitioners accountable.
She also raised concerns about patient safety, pointing out that cases of medical negligence, misdiagnosis and avoidable complications are becoming more common. Lawani argued that clearer regulations and stricter monitoring would help protect patients and restore public confidence in the health sector.
In addition, she highlighted the financial strain on Nigerians seeking medical care, saying the absence of pricing guidelines and transparency has made quality healthcare increasingly inaccessible. She called on the government to introduce policies that promote fairness, professionalism and accountability in both public and private health facilities.
Lawani urged relevant agencies to intensify inspections, enforce penalties for malpractice and invest in healthcare infrastructure. She maintained that regulation is essential not to hinder medical professionals, but to ensure safety, standardisation and trust within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Her comments have since sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that meaningful reforms are needed to improve healthcare delivery across the country.
