NCC Targets 23 Million Offline Nigerians With Satellite Broadband Support
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to connect about 23 million Nigerians who currently lack internet access, leveraging satellite broadband technology to bridge the country’s digital divide.
According to the telecoms regulator, millions of Nigerians—mostly in rural, remote, and underserved communities—remain offline due to challenges such as poor infrastructure, difficult terrain, and high deployment costs. The NCC says satellite broadband presents a viable solution to extend connectivity to these areas where traditional fibre and mobile networks are limited.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to improve digital inclusion, expand broadband penetration, and boost economic participation through technology. By deploying satellite-based internet solutions, the NCC aims to support education, healthcare delivery, e-commerce, financial inclusion, and access to government services.
Industry experts have described the move as a critical step toward achieving Nigeria’s national broadband targets. Satellite broadband is seen as particularly effective for hard-to-reach regions, offering faster deployment and wider coverage compared to conventional infrastructure.
The NCC noted that collaboration with licensed satellite operators, telecom companies, and other stakeholders will be central to the success of the programme. Regulatory support and policy alignment are also expected to encourage private-sector investment in satellite communications.
As Nigeria continues to pursue a digitally driven economy, the commission believes that connecting millions of offline citizens will unlock new opportunities, reduce inequality, and strengthen national development.
