Presidency Fires Back as Peter Obi Calls on Tinubu to Resign
The Presidency has reacted sharply to comments by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, dismissing the demand as inappropriate and undemocratic.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency criticized Obi’s remarks and argued that Nigeria operates a presidential system in which elected leaders serve fixed terms as provided by the Constitution. The statement maintained that calls for resignation based on political disagreements do not align with the country’s democratic framework.
According to the Presidency, comparisons between Nigeria’s system of government and parliamentary democracies such as the United Kingdom are misplaced, noting that the two systems function differently.
The exchange comes amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi recently secured the presidential nomination of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), confirming his intention to challenge for the presidency once again.
Political tensions have continued to rise as opposition figures criticize the federal government’s handling of issues such as insecurity and economic hardship. Several political groups and individuals have also separately called on President Tinubu to resign over security concerns in recent months.
However, the Presidency insists that the administration remains focused on governance and has pointed to electoral victories by the ruling party in recent contests as evidence of continued public support.
The latest war of words highlights the increasingly competitive political atmosphere as major parties and candidates begin positioning themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 presidential election.
