Don Jazzy reveals regrets over missing out on signing Simi, Teni, Davido, Falz
Don Jazzy, the acclaimed Nigerian music producer and founder of Mavin Records, has opened up about some of his biggest regrets in the industry—missing the opportunity to sign some of Nigeria’s brightest stars, including Simi, Teni, Davido, and Falz.
In a candid revelation during a recent interview, Don Jazzy shared how he had early access to the talents of these now-prominent artists but, for various reasons, didn’t bring them on board under his label. He explained that while his attention was often divided with other pressing projects at the time, he now looks back and wonders what could have been if he had signed them.
The hitmaker praised Simi for her undeniable vocal strength and authenticity, revealing that she had even participated in an online talent showcase he had organized. Despite her clear talent, the timing didn’t align. Today, Simi is recognized for her soulful voice and chart-topping records.
Don Jazzy also recalled how Teni sent him freestyles that displayed raw energy and originality. Though impressed, he noted that he was deeply focused on other artists under Mavin Records at the time. Now, Teni is celebrated across Africa for her dynamic music and unique personality.
When it comes to Davido, Don Jazzy admitted he saw early signs of greatness but didn’t act swiftly enough. Davido would go on to become one of the biggest African artists globally, known for his hit tracks and international collaborations.
Similarly, Falz had crossed his radar early in his career. Don Jazzy revealed that he admired Falz’s style and lyrical creativity but didn’t make a move, something he now looks back on with a sense of missed opportunity.
While Don Jazzy has played a significant role in shaping the careers of stars like Rema, Ayra Starr, Crayon, and Johnny Drille, this revelation underscores the fact that even the most successful talent scouts don’t always catch every big fish.
Despite these missed signings, Don Jazzy remains a towering figure in the Nigerian music scene, with an ear for talent that continues to push the boundaries of Afrobeats. His humility in acknowledging these moments only further cements his reputation as a leader who’s constantly learning and evolving in an ever-changing industry.
The producer’s reflections serve as a reminder to aspiring music executives and talent managers: in the fast-moving world of music, timing and decisiveness are everything.
