Aina Earns Glasner’s Praise After Forest’s Win Against Villa
Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner has praised Super Eagles defender Ola Aina for his impressive display in the club’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Aina was asked to play in an unfamiliar centre-back role because of injuries to two of Forest’s regular central defenders, but the Nigerian international adapted well as Forest secured their first Premier League victory of the season.
The win also ended Forest’s long wait for a league victory at Villa Park, with Igor Jesus scoring the late winner after Aston Villa had fought back to level the game.
Glasner revealed that he had spoken to Aina before deciding to use him at centre-back and was impressed by the defender’s response.
The Forest boss said he was particularly proud of the Nigerian for accepting the challenge and delivering a disciplined performance despite playing outside his usual position.
Aina’s defensive contribution was significant throughout the encounter. He recorded three tackles, one interception, four clearances and two recoveries, helping Forest withstand Villa’s pressure during the match.
Forest had entered the match still searching for their first Premier League victory of the campaign after a difficult opening to the season.
Glasner’s team had lost to Leeds United before drawing with Liverpool and Tottenham, making the trip to Villa Park an important opportunity to change their fortunes.
They took full advantage.
Liam Delap opened the scoring shortly after the restart before Villa responded through new signing Alysson, who headed in the equaliser.
Forest refused to settle for a point, however, and Igor Jesus struck late to secure a dramatic victory.
The performance once again highlighted Aina’s versatility and value to Forest.
Primarily deployed as a full-back or wing-back, the 29-year-old showed that he can also provide an option in central defence when required.
His ability to adapt was particularly important given Forest’s defensive absences, and Glasner’s decision to trust him in the position ultimately paid off.
For Aina, the performance represents another positive moment under Glasner as he continues to establish himself as an important member of the Forest squad.
