Another Nollywood Actress, Atinuke Kareem, Dies After Battle With Cancer

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Nollywood actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, popularly known as Atinuke Kareem, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

Kareem’s death was announced on Tuesday, September 1, by Owolabi Ajasa, the Ogun State executive of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), through a statement shared on Instagram.

The announcement comes at a particularly painful time for the Yoruba film industry, coming only days after the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who also died following a battle with cancer.

In the statement announcing Kareem’s passing, TAMPAN Ogun State expressed appreciation to colleagues, fans and well-wishers who supported the actress during her illness.

The association acknowledged the financial contributions, prayers and encouragement that were offered to Kareem and her family throughout her treatment.

Ajasa said the efforts made to support her treatment were unfortunately not enough to save her life, while praying for strength for her family, colleagues and loved ones.

Kareem’s battle with breast cancer had previously become public after she appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance to continue her treatment.

In a video circulated alongside the announcement of her death, the actress spoke openly about the financial burden the illness had placed on her family. She also disclosed that TAMPAN had supported her, but that the assistance was not enough to cover her medical needs.

The actress also revealed that she had two young children, making her appeal particularly emotional as she sought help from the public.

Her plea attracted support from fans, colleagues and other well-wishers, with people contributing towards her treatment and offering prayers during her difficult period.

Kareem’s death has added to a difficult period for the Yoruba movie industry.

Her passing came only eight days after veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, died on August 23, 2026, following a prolonged battle with cancer. His death had already prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans across the industry.

The two deaths in such a short period have intensified the sense of loss within the Yoruba film community, with colleagues and admirers paying tribute to both entertainers.

News of Kareem’s death has sparked emotional reactions across social media, with fans and colleagues remembering her and expressing sadness over her passing.

One reported reaction came from a colleague who said she had been with Kareem during her final chemotherapy treatment, describing the news as particularly painful.

For many who followed her cancer journey, Kareem’s death has also renewed conversations about the financial challenges faced by patients and families dealing with prolonged medical treatment.

Atinuke Kareem’s journey has ended with the Nigerian entertainment community mourning a performer who continued to seek hope and support while battling a serious illness.

As tributes continue to emerge, colleagues, friends and fans are remembering the late actress and extending condolences to her family, especially her two young children.

Her death is another reminder of the profound human cost of cancer and the emotional and financial burden that prolonged treatment can place on families.

May her soul rest in peace.
