Impeachment for Busisiwe Mkhwebane: PP’s job hanging by a thread

Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who is currently taking a sabbatical from her position, might not have a job to go back to at this rate. The DA has confirmed that Parliament will host impeachment proceedings against the Public Protector – making her the first Chapter 9 office-bearer to face such a hearing.

BUSISIWE MKHWEBANE HEADING FOR IMPEACHMENT
The tapestry of controversy that has led us here is woven with blunders and misdemeanours. Busisiwe Mkhwebane is coming up for her fifth year in office, but the chances of her seeing a full-term out up until 2023 are slimming. Natasha Mazzone is the chief whip for the opposition party, and she feels that impeachment is ‘long overdue’:

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the finding by the Independent Review Panel that there is a prima facie case for Parliament to institute removal proceedings against the Public Protector, Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane. We are pleased by these findings and urge Parliament to institute the removal proceedings against Mkhwebane without delay.”

“During her tenure as Public Protector, the Courts have made damning findings against Mkhwebane, where her fitness to hold this vital post has been called into question numerous times. Her independence and credibility have also been called into questions on a number of occasions and she has failed to inspire trust within the public.”

PUBLIC PROTECTOR’S WILD RIDE
Amongst other things, Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been accused of committing perjury in the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Her supposed mishandling of the Estina Dairy Farm case – and subsequent failed legal challenges – undermined her standing as Parliament’s top legal authority, too.

Mkhwebane further angered her colleagues when she laid criminal charges against ex-Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, for releasing a transcript of an interview she had with Jacob Zuma. The duel between Mandonsela and her successor left a bitter taste in many mouths, and it’s likely to be used against Mkhwebane in the upcoming impeachment case.
