Nigerian Samson Adamu Named CAF General Secretary
Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed the new General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a significant achievement for Nigeria in African football administration.
CAF announced the appointment on Sunday, November 1, 2026, confirming Adamu as the substantive holder of the organisation’s top administrative position following an extensive recruitment process.
Adamu had been serving as Acting General Secretary since March 2026, following the departure of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said Adamu’s confirmation followed a comprehensive recruitment exercise during which the position was widely advertised and several candidates were interviewed.
According to CAF, the appointment was approved by its Executive Committee after the selection process.
Motsepe expressed confidence in Adamu’s experience and knowledge of African football administration, noting his contributions to the organisation’s major competitions.
Adamu joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.
During his time with the continental football governing body, he played an important role in organising major competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, a qualification focused on the international sports industry.
Adamu’s appointment represents a historic moment for Nigeria, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy CAF’s General Secretary position since the organisation was established in 1957.
The position carries significant administrative responsibilities, including overseeing CAF’s day-to-day operations and supporting the implementation of decisions and strategic priorities set by its leadership.
His confirmation also strengthens Nigeria’s representation within the administrative structure of African football.
As General Secretary, Adamu will work closely with CAF President Patrice Motsepe and other senior officials in managing the organisation’s operations.
His responsibilities will include supporting the delivery of continental competitions and ensuring the effective implementation of CAF’s administrative and strategic programmes.
His appointment comes at a time when African football continues to expand its international profile, with major competitions and development initiatives requiring strong administrative coordination.
For Nigeria, Adamu’s confirmation is an important moment in the country’s football administration history and places a Nigerian in one of the most influential administrative positions in African football.
