Nigeria’s Gas Production Rises to 7.93bcf/d in May 2026
Nigeria’s natural gas production rose to 7.93 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in May 2026, according to data released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. The latest figures indicate continued stability in the country’s gas sector as efforts to expand production and utilization gain momentum.
According to the regulator’s gas production and utilization report, the May output represented a 0.63 percent increase compared to the 7.88bcf/d recorded during the same period in 2025. However, production slipped marginally from the 7.94bcf/d achieved in April 2026.
The report also highlighted growth in domestic gas sales, which reached approximately 2.18bcf/d, reflecting increasing demand from industries, power generation companies, and other local consumers. The development aligns with the Federal Government’s push to deepen domestic gas utilization and support economic growth through the “Decade of Gas” initiative.
Industry analysts note that Nigeria has maintained a positive production trend in recent months, with output gradually increasing from 7.80bcf/d in January to 7.81bcf/d in February, 7.85bcf/d in March, 7.94bcf/d in April, and 7.93bcf/d in May.
The Federal Government has set ambitious targets for the sector, aiming to boost gas production to 10bcf/d by 2027 and 12bcf/d by 2030 as part of broader plans to leverage Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves for industrialization, energy security, and economic diversification.
Experts believe sustained investment in gas infrastructure, processing facilities, and domestic distribution networks will be crucial to achieving these objectives and maximizing the country’s gas potential.
As global demand for cleaner energy sources continues to grow, Nigeria is positioning natural gas as a key driver of its energy transition strategy and long-term economic development agenda.
