Peter Okoye Opens Up on What Pushed Him to Speak Out About His Brothers
Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has opened up about what pushed him to publicly address his long-running conflict with his twin brother, Paul Okoye, and their elder brother, Jude Okoye.
Speaking during a recent interview with Capital XTRA, Peter explained that he initially hoped the family dispute would eventually be resolved privately. However, according to him, his expectations of an apology and change from his brothers were never fulfilled, while the situation continued to worsen.
Peter said he had been hoping for what he described as a “wind of change” within the family.
According to the singer, he expected Paul and Jude to eventually acknowledge that they had wronged him and take steps towards resolving their differences.
“Maybe I was hoping there was going to be, let’s just say, a wind of change. You know, these individuals are going to one day say, ‘Okay, Peter, I think we’ve wronged you.’ But it’s getting deeper, deeper, deeper, deeper,” he said.
Peter’s comments come amid months of increasingly public revelations about the breakdown of his relationship with his brothers and the circumstances surrounding the repeated collapse of P-Square.
The Mr P crooner also insisted that his decision to speak publicly was not motivated by a desire for public sympathy or validation.
He explained that he was more concerned about the millions of fans who supported P-Square throughout the duo’s career and wanted them to understand what happened behind the scenes.
“I do not need public opinion. But just that I feel like the fans of Peace Square needs justice of what happened to their Peace Square,” Peter said.
Peter has previously released a series of videos detailing his account of the disagreements within the family, touching on issues involving finances, management, personal relationships and the eventual breakdown of his relationship with Paul.
Peter and Paul Okoye, who became one of Africa’s most successful music duos as P-Square, first split in 2017 before publicly reconciling in 2021.
Peter later said the 2021 reunion was primarily about restoring their relationship as brothers rather than reviving P-Square as a musical group. He claimed he had made it clear to Paul that he did not want to return to the duo at the time.
The latest dispute has also involved their elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye, particularly over allegations surrounding the management and distribution of P-Square’s earnings.
Peter has made allegations concerning royalties and the handling of the group’s finances, while Jude has denied the allegations and offered a different account of the transactions. The financial dispute has also featured in ongoing legal proceedings.
