Tweeps bemoan EKSU management over N78,000 convocation fee

Twitter users have bemoaned the management of Ekiti State University over the N78,000 convocation ceremony fee for graduating students.

The management of EKSU, on March 8, had announced the combined 25th and 26th convocation ceremonies on the university website for graduates from 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic sessions.

The graduating students were subsequently asked to pay a fee of N78,000.

Twitter users have, on Wednesday, taken to the social media platform to protest and condemn the development, describing the N78,000 convocation fee as exorbitant and extorting.

They tweeted under the hashtag ‘#SaveEksu.’

A Twitter user, @Im_versatiles tweeted, “acceptance fee 107,000, convocation fee 78,000 in a school that has no electricity, no good road, no conducive learning environment?”

“Most parents borrowed from LAPO and SEAP just to ensure their kids could graduate, and EKSU want them to go and borrow 78k for convocation.
Do you want to give them a job? These people want to make life unbearable to a layman,” @Priesthood10 said in a tweet.

“EKSU, stop the exorbitant fees and levies, multiple extortion.

“Schooling in EKSU should not be seen as a form of illegal cash out.

“78k is too much for struggling parents and students, Una won turn them to daylight robbers? We say no to 78k before certificate collection #SaveEKSU,” another user, @Bayonle_Adesua, posted.

The PUNCH confirmed that an amount of N73,000 was for the convocation while N5,000 was for alumni due, totalling N78,000.

One of the graduating students, who pleaded anonymity, also confirmed the fee to The PUNCH, adding that they were being extorted.

“We’re complaining bitterly and they refuse to listen to us.

“EKSU is really extorting us and we can’t even protest, they will bring the police to threaten us,” he said.

The convocation ceremony is scheduled to hold alongside the university’s 40th anniversary from 23rd to 30th of March, 2022.
