Veteran Nollywood Actor Baba Opebe Battles Serious Health Issues as Kunle Afod Seeks Help
Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Yomi King, popularly known as Baba Opebe, has opened up about his prolonged health battle after colleague Kunle Afod visited him and called on Nigerians to support the ailing actor.
Afod reportedly travelled to Baba Opebe’s remote residence after concerns grew among colleagues and fans who had been unable to reach him. The actor’s phone had reportedly stopped connecting, prompting Afod to personally check on him.
During the emotional visit, Baba Opebe disclosed that he had been sick since last year and had received treatment at several hospitals.
The veteran actor explained that doctors discovered that he had low blood levels, leading to him receiving four pints of blood as part of his treatment.
He also dismissed suggestions that he had deliberately withdrawn from the public, explaining that his absence was connected to his health condition.
Baba Opebe revealed that his children have been taking care of him throughout the difficult period. He also expressed appreciation to fellow veteran actor Mr Latin for checking on him and offering support.
Moved by the condition in which he found his colleague, Kunle Afod donated ₦100,000 to Baba Opebe during the visit.
Afod went beyond his personal donation by appealing to Nigerians to come to the veteran actor’s aid through financial, medical and spiritual support.
The appeal has attracted attention from fans and members of the entertainment community, with many taking to social media to pray for Baba Opebe’s recovery.
Baba Opebe is regarded as one of the veteran comic actors who contributed to the development of Yoruba-language cinema.
The actor reportedly trained under the late Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, and appeared in the 1987 television programme Erinkeke. His comic performances over the years earned him recognition among Yoruba movie audiences.
His current health situation has therefore renewed conversations about the welfare of ageing Nollywood veterans, many of whom face financial and medical challenges after years of contributing to the Nigerian entertainment industry.
For now, Kunle Afod and supporters of Baba Opebe are appealing for assistance as the veteran actor continues his recovery.
