Stage-Four Cancer: Doctor Explains Palliative Care After Ogogo Daughters’ Hospital Claim

A Nigerian medical doctor has clarified the meaning of palliative care following concerns raised by the daughters of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, over their father’s treatment for Stage 4 cancer.

The actor’s daughters recently made an emotional appeal about their father’s condition, claiming that hospitals were no longer willing to continue treating him and asking for assistance in finding other treatment options.

Reacting to the claims, medical doctor Dr Olusina Ajidahun, popularly known online as The Beared Dr Sina, said the statement that doctors had “refused” to treat Ogogo could create a misleading impression about the medical team.

Ajidahun clarified that he has no connection to Ogogo’s medical care and was commenting independently on the situation.

According to the doctor, when a patient has Stage 4 cancer and chemotherapy or other cancer-directed treatments have been explored, doctors may recommend palliative care.

He explained that palliative care focuses on managing symptoms, reducing suffering and improving a patient’s quality of life when the disease can no longer be effectively controlled with curative treatment.

Importantly, palliative care does not simply mean that doctors have abandoned a patient. It is a form of specialised medical support aimed at helping patients remain as comfortable and functional as possible.

Palliative care can involve managing pain, nausea, breathing difficulties and other symptoms, as well as providing emotional and psychological support to patients and their families.

Ajidahun also reacted to the family’s reported appeal for herbal remedies that could treat Stage 4 cancer.

He warned that there is no established herbal concoction proven to cure Stage 4 cancer, and cautioned that unverified remedies could cause additional complications or damage other organs.

He encouraged Ogogo’s family to continue working closely with the actor’s medical team and to seek appropriate specialist advice rather than abandoning evidence-based treatment for unproven alternatives.

Stage 4 cancer generally means that cancer has spread from its original site to other parts of the body. The exact outlook and treatment options, however, depend heavily on the type of cancer, where it has spread, the patient’s overall condition and how the disease responds to treatment.

The doctor’s comments have generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians questioning whether palliative care means giving up, while others expressed sympathy for Ogogo’s family as they navigate the difficult situation.

The development has also prompted renewed conversations about the importance of understanding advanced cancer treatment and communicating clearly with families during difficult medical circumstances.

As Ogogo’s family continues to seek the best possible care for the veteran actor, the medical explanation has offered some context around why a treatment plan may change when cancer reaches an advanced stage.
